This real wedding of Amanda & Kenny photographed by Isaiah & Taylor is incredible on so many levels and it’s a pleasure to share it with you.
Shot by the amazing husband and wife photography duo Isaiah & Taylor (who we’re a big fan of here at Off To Wed), Amanda and Kenny looked stunning. We’ve got smoke tattoos, rustic charm, and some serious style. It’s easy to get carried away with having all the right ‘stuff’ at our weddings but this Californian wedding was built out of love rather than commerce – wait till you hear Amanda’s thoughts on her wedding dress.
Together, Amanda’s words and Isaiah & Taylors’ photographs will inspire your wedding planning and preparations, so let’s get on with it and hear what Amanda has to say about what looked like a wonderful day.
TELL US, WHERE DID YOU GET MARRIED AND WHY?
The venue is called The French Estate. We decided to choose this venue not only because of the unbeatable affordability, but also just the way the venue looked. It was so rustic. We were able to use decorations that had been left or donated from other weddings held at that Venue. It reminded me of my Grandparents house in Oregon and you could feel the amount of love that has walked through the doors. I would get married there again tomorrow!
SO WHEN DID YOU GET MARRIED AND HOW DID YOU PICK THAT DATE?
December 13, 2014. 12-13-14. Originally, we wanted to get married in October but so did everyone else. So October did not work. At the French Estate, Sarah (the wedding coordinator) was offering a 20% discount if you decided to get married in the off-season. I pulled out my calendar and looked in December thinking, “We could pull off a winter type wedding.” (Not that California has a real Winter) I am a sucker for numbers so I had to be able to say the date and put the numbers together to make sure they sounded cool and that they had a certain flow to them. I saw 12-13-14 and realized it was a Saturday. I jumped for joy when she told me that no one had reserved that day yet so it worked out perfect!
EVERY BRIDE WANTS A DRY DAY, WHAT SORT OF WEATHER DID YOU HAVE?
With California, you never know…it could be pouring rain in the morning and by 3pm, its sunny and 75. True story- the 10 day weather forecast said there was a 60% chance of rain on our wedding day. At the French Estate, it’s all outside. You can rent tents for weather but that was just something I did not want to even think about. As the big day got closer, the percentage of rain continued to change. 60%, 10%, 90%… it was all over the board. I got really scared when I went to coffee the night before our wedding and it was raining. It rained all 3 days before our wedding and 3 days after but the day of [the wedding]… absolutely beautiful. Not a cloud in sight. I was speechless. I definitely knew something or someone was looking out for us. The grass was so green and lush from the rain days prior. It couldn’t have been better!
WHERE DID YOU MEET AND HOW DID KENNY POP THE QUESTION?
Kenny and I met just through a friend. There was a guy I went to school with, Mike, who was really good friends with Kenny. Kenny and I quickly hit it off and decided to become boyfriend and girlfriend in May of 2007. On May 25, 2009 we were at a BBQ at a friends house for Memorial Day and Kenny kept rushing me to leave. I didn’t want to. I was having fun and eating great food! We eventually left and he drove me to this park in Orange, California that looks over a large part of the city. He had talked about this view and how amazing it was at night time but I had never seen it so I figured he was just wanting to show me. We parked, walked across the park and stood there in the dark looking over Orange County. You could even see the Angels Baseball Stadium! Oddly enough, at this time another couple had walked up. I looked at them, holding each other’s hands and the guy says to Kenny, “Huh, looks like I wasn’t the only one with this idea tonight.” I had no idea was he was talking about. I had seen some scary movies in my day so I wasn’t quite sure what to expect! By the time my head turned back over to look at Kenny, Kenny had got down on one knee, had this little box in his hand and said, “Amanda Michelle, will you marry me?” I don’t think I even said “yes”, but I think he knew my answer by the high pitch scream I had let out as the tears rolled down my face out of pure joy. It wasn’t until five and a half years later that we decided to get married. We were really in no rush to do it and wanted it to be perfect. And it was.
WHAT ARE THE MOST MEMORABLE PARTS OF THE WEDDING DAY?
There’s a couple! One: Seeing a butterfly out of my window as I arrived at the venue to get ready. Butterflies remind me of my stepmother who passed away in March 2014 and had full intentions of attending out wedding. I knew she was there with us that day. She wouldn’t miss it for the world. Two: Having my Dad to my right and my step dad to my left as they BOTH walked me down the aisle. Three: Kenny’s face when he saw me in my dress for the first time. Four: The tears of joy that came down his face as I walked down the aisle toward him. In all honesty though, the entire day was really one big memorable moment that I will never forget.
WERE THERE ANY FUNNY MOMENTS?
When my dad and step dad walked me down the aisle and the officiate asked “Who gives this girl away?” My dad had said, “I do.” and my step dad was silent. He was supposed to say something too! I mean, hello! We practiced this at rehearsal! So I nudged him and said, “Say something!” and my step dad said, “OH! Yeah, me too!” The crowd thought it was hilarious, as did I! Another funny moment I can remember is when they asked for the “token” of love. Kenny and I were both so confused as to what this “token” was! I looked out to the crowd and made eye contact with my mom and gave her this, “What is a token?” look. The officiate said, “Umm…the rings. The rings are the tokens.” Everyone loved that and laughed. Our ceremony was actually very funny and I wouldn’t have it any other way. It was so “us”.
DID YOU HAVE A COLOUR THEME OR SPECIFIC WEDDING STYLE?
Very neutral, really. We had browns, greens, deep reds, beige. I didn’t want anything too flashy. We kept it as rustic as possible, with a lot of homemade decorations that I worked on for months!
TELL US ABOUT THE DRESS WHO WAS THE DESIGNER?
Designer? Who knows. I don’t follow any of that stuff. My momma raised me and taught me how to stretch a dollar. I didn’t want an expensive dress. Again, it wasn’t “me” to wear something like that. Even on the day of my wedding. I went to David Bridal and picked out 7 dresses all under $1,000. Dress number 2 I liked the best. The woman who helped me put the dress on agreed that number 2 was the best but to continue to try on the remaining 5 to make everyone happy. She was so right! So I tried on all 7 but still stuck with number 2 and it was absolutely GORGEOUS! AND it was about $600. Hello!
AND WHO TELLS HELPED BUILD YOUR WEDDING?
- All the bridesmaids got their dresses as David’s Bridal as well.
- The groom and groomsmen got all of their stuff from Men’s Warehouse.
- Most of the decorations, I made my hand with the help Pinterest, Google and my MOH.
Catering was through a company that my venue worked with called Elegant Affair out of Anaheim, Ca.
- My hair and makeup was done by Jessica Hughes (JHue Makeup), she did such an amazing job and is so nice and easy to work with!
- My flowers were from a friend who my husband used to work with. Her name is Anna and her company is called Heavy Petal Flowers. She is seriously THE BEST.
- Our cake was from Creative Cakes in Orange, Ca.
- For our wedding favours, my mom bought a bunch of candy and bags and hosted a little candy bar. That was a huge hit and everyone LOVED that!
- Our music was by DJ George of DJ Connection in Cypress, Ca. I have known him for a really long time and he has always done a great job.
- Our photographers were Isaiah and Taylor Photography. There are absolutely no words in this world to describe how amazing they are. They did our late engagement/ Save the Date photos also. They are the nicest, most warm-hearted people I have ever met. They captured our wedding day in a way that I never thought was possible. They are very special to us and always will be.
- The best part was my wedding shoes. I got them for $13 at Target. They were super cozy and warm moccasins!
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SAY ABOUT THESE SUPPLIERS?
Just that they are the absolute best and I am blessed to have been given the opportunity to work with them. If we got married again tomorrow, I would hire them all again in a heartbeat. No doubt about it.
THANKS AMANDA, IS THERE ANYTHING THAT YOU’D LIKE TO ADD?
That getting married was easily the best day of my life. It was truly a dream come true and I have found happiness in something truly amazing. My life is good.
