September 9th, 2014

Planning a wedding isn’t something that you will do very often, once you’re engaged to be married you need to suddenly develop a set of event management skills that you hadn’t previously considered. You’ll spend all your spare time flicking through magazines, reading blogs and visiting wedding fairs.

Well here’s another way to do it, it’s kind of a wedding fair on a much smaller scale, more personal and possibly more engaging. On the 11th September No. 3 Hairdressing are opening their doors for what they describe as “an intimate evening of inspiration and bespoke advice focussing on everything a bride needs to look and feel amazing on the most stylish day of her life.”

Besides practical hair demonstrations by the bridal style team at No. 3 Hairdressing, there will be wedding flowers by floral stylist Wired, make up tuition from Little Lab, dress inspiration from designer Jessica Charleston, photography advice from A boy called Ben and hand-crafted cocktails by Sub 13 – all with a live music backdrop from Sam Eason.

Some of the people you’ll meet…

Sam Eason – Live Music

A singer/songwriter/performer originally from Bristol, now based in Bath. Sam has been playing gigs and festivals around Bristol and Bath for the past 10 years, but has recently begun performing at weddings and events. Mainly playing acoustic guitar Sam also uses a loop pedal to add an extra layer or two of melody or percussion to supplement his sound.

With influences ranging, from 60s folk like James Taylor and Nick Drake, through to more modern singers and bands like Damien Rice, Newton Faulkner and Embrace, recent weddings have seen Sam perform songs by the likes of Mumford & Sons, Elvis Presley, Van Morrision, The Stereophonics, The Lumineers and even Daft Punk!

“When given the honour of playing for a couple’s big day, I like to ensure I play sets of songs which sum up the couple and their musical history together – I have a large repertoire to cater for most tastes and like to take on challenges of learning new songs that have special meaning for the bride and/or groom! When performing at weddings, my wife Beth will usually join me for a large portion of the sets which lends an extra depth and harmony to the performance” – Sam Eason

Sub 13 – Cocktails / wedding venue

Sub 13 specialise in providing exciting cocktails, a party atmosphere and a sophisticated venue. Smack bang in the the city of Bath with the unique Perrier-Jouët Champagne terrace capable of accommodating 150 people boasting a sun trap in the summer but providing heat and cover so you can enjoy an al fresco celebration at any time of year and in any weather.

A uniquely stylish and modern alternative to the traditional wedding reception.

Jessica Charleston – Designer

All Jessica Charleston’s dresses are designed and made at her boutique and workshop in Bath. Jessica believes that your wedding day is an incredibly special day for which you deserve to wear something unique and really personal to you. She’s passionate about encouraging brides-to-be to collaborate on designing a dress which really represents their true character. Each consulation is different and while you are free to try on Jessica’s collection dresses you will most likely end up with an amalgamation of your favourite designs or an entirely new design all together. Jessica usually ends a consultation with various ideas for more than one new dress to add to her collection.

Jessica begins the process with her brides brainstorming ideas and working out what excites them, trying on samples, draping fabrics and looking at all sorts of design ideas on the web and in magazines. When Jessica feels she understands what her bride really wants, she sketches out some different dress designs and between the two of them, they work out on paper something they think is just right. It’s actually a very safe and secure process, because at this point, Jessica makes a toile – a mock-up of the dress to make sure the design works perfectly. It’s only when the toile is just right that Jessica goes on to make the final dress, from the beginning, all over again, in silks, lace or any other fabric personal to the bride. It’s a really inspiring experience and one which sees her brides feeling truly connected with their dresses for so many reasons.

Jessica draws inspiration from a wide range of sources including costume from the decadent years of The Belle-epoque through to the 1930s as well as some surprising sources of more contemporary design, from architecture to album covers. She’s been making dresses since childhood and, after studying at London College of Fashion and in Bath, has been based here for over eight years, designing and making wedding dresses. Now with a lovely boutique and workshop on London Street, she is going from strength to strength so book an appointment in plenty of time and discover a different way to find a dress for your perfect day.

Boy Called Ben – Photographer

A wedding photographer based in Bristol, travelling far and wide to document people in love. Ben works unobtrusively throughout the day to capture genuine, intimate and fleeting moments that combined, tell an emotional story from beginning right through to the end.
