Hello it’s 2015 so why aren’t women making speeches at the wedding. Why are we leaving it up to the lads to do all the talking?
The wedding toasts have got #EveryDaySexism written all over them. The groom gets to say his piece and there’s a nice bit of banter and bromance from the best man but the bride gets to sit down and stay quiet throughout. The speeches are kicked off with the bride’s old man eulogizing his daughter before handing over to the groom who remarks on her beauty and tells the tale of how they met. Well, if we want to big-up the bride maybe we should let her have her say.
What’s it going to take to give women a voice at the wedding, surely we shouldn’t have to see the bridal lingerie burning to get a little wedding equality.
When you think about it, there are a lot of antiquated wedding traditions with a hint of sexism. Admittedly, I do like seeing the bride walking down the aisle with her papa and the dad always looks pleased as punch to be sharing this tradition with his daughter but seriously – one man giving away a woman to another man, little bit sexist? I have seen the bride and groom walk down the aisle together which was a great modern approach and there are so many alternatives that I could share with you but it’s the speeches that I want to speak up about today. Go on brides out there grab a mic and have your say.
